James L. Gutmann, D.D.S., received the I.B. Bender Lifetime Educator Award from the American Association of Endodontists during the Association’s recent Annual Session in San Antonio, Texas.
Dedicating his career to education, Dr. Gutmann has presented more than 800 lectures, papers and continuing education courses in the United States and 51 foreign countries. After working in a private endodontic practice, he entered academia as assistant professor of endodontics at the Medical College of Virginia in 1975. The following year, he was appointed chair of the department of endodontics at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland at Baltimore. In 1982, Dr. Gutmann was tenured and became chair of the department of endodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas.
“He holds his students to high standards, with which they comply due to his remarkable teaching abilities and the great esteem they feel for him,” said Dr. John S. Olmsted, chair of the AAE Honors and Awards Committee. “Many of his students go on to become Diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics because Dr. Gutmann instills the desire to perform to the best of their abilities.”
In addition to his contributions to education, Dr. Gutmann has been a member of the AAE since 1971. He has chaired and been a member of numerous committees and served as president from 2000-2001. He earned his D.D.S. from Marquette University School of Dentistry in 1970 and his Certificate in Endodontics from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry in 1972.
