Gary R. Hartwell, D.D.S., M.S., was elected to serve as vice president of the American Association of Endodontists during its 2011 Annual Session Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
Dr. Hartwell is the endodontic program director, chair and a professor at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark, N.J. Previously, Dr. Hartwell served the Board as District II director (2007-2010) and District I director (1994-1997). An AAE member since 1972, serves on the Journal of Endodontics Scientific Advisory Board and is Board liaison to the Public and Professional Affairs Committee. He currently serves on committees at the UMDNJ dental school, and has previously served on committees of the American Dental Education Association and the Richmond Dental Society.
A Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics since 1980, Dr. Hartwell is an accomplished endodontic educator previously serving in leadership capacities at Virginia Commonwealth University and the U.S. Army Dental Corps. He has had several hospital appointments and, most recently, taught at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Hampton, Va. A resident of Richmond, Va., he volunteers at many organizations such as the Special Olympics and the Freedom House. Dr. Hartwell received his D.D.S. from West Virginia University in 1966, his Certificate in Endodontics from the U.S. Army Dental Corps in 1973, and his M.S. in oral biology from George Washington University in 1974.
