The AAE conducts regular media monitoring and with guidance from the Public and Professional Relations Committee, AAE leadership and public relations staff, responds to timely topics as needed to represent the specialty and our members.
July 2013 – AAE President Dr. Gary R. Hartwell wrote a letter to Wall Street Journal columnist Shirley Wang in response to her article "To Avoid Root Canals, Teeth That Replace Themselves." Dr. Hartwell congratulates the author on her research on regenerative endodontics, but stresses that root canal treatment is no longer a painful procedure with all of the technological advances and is still the number one option to save natural teeth.
June 2013 - After reading the article in the February 2013 JADA, “Rubber dam use during root canal treatment: Findings from the dental practice‐based research network” (JADA 144:179‐86), AAE Immediate Past President Dr. James C. Kulild wrote a letter to the editor that was published in the June 2013 JADA explaining the AAE’s position on rubber dams, emphasizing its importance as a standard of practice for all patients undergoing endodontic treatment.
April 2013 – AAE Vice President Dr. Robert R. Roda responded to Joe Queenan’s “Moving Targets” column in the Wall Street Journal about his dental treatment and tooth pain. Read Dr. Roda’s explanation of why endodontic treatment is the best option.
September 2012 - In response to the May 2012 JADA article “Outcomes of Endodontic Therapy in General Practice: A Study by the Practitioners Engaged in Applied Research and Learning Network” (JADA 2012;143:478-487), AAE President Dr. James C. Kulild submitted a letter to the editor on behalf of the AAE questioning the validity of the study and suggesting that proper case selection contributes to highest levels of patient care.
