Management of the Alveolar Ridge for Successful Implants
Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties Lecture/Workshop
George E. Romanos, D.D.S., Dr.Med.Dent., Ph.D.
This lecture demonstrates the characteristics of “successful” dental implants and presents the methods of treatment in order to achieve a predictable long-term result. From the treatment planning to the management of bone deficiencies in the edentulous alveolar ridge using instrumentation (bone spreading/condensing), and also more advanced surgical methods like the augmentation of the alveolar ridge. The lecture will emphasize the surgical methodology in combination with the proper implant design, allowing crestal bone stability.
At conclusion, participants should be able to:
- Identify the challenges and opportunities that exist in this new treatment solution and determine objectively if implementing implants into their endodontic practice is right.
- Diagnose and treatment plan implant cases.
- Perform implant surgery, including proper extraction and grafting techniques for optimal site preparation, as well as surgical implant placement protocol.
NobelActive Implant
Nobel Biocare Lecture/Workshop
Charles A. Babbush, D.D.S., M.Sc.D.
This didactic and hands-on workshop session will help you solve a serious dilemma for your patient. A significant number of treated teeth and their concurrent post and crown restorations could fail due to fracture. This course will demonstrate how to atraumatically remove the problem root and immediately place a dental implant along with an immediate provisional restoration. With these items in place, initial stability can be achieved. This concept of treatment will overcome patient disappointment by providing a “new tooth” on an immediate basis.
At conclusion, participants should be able to:
- Describe criteria for when the implant site requires grafting.
- Easily fabricate both chair-side and laboratory-produced provisional restorations for both natural teeth and implants.
- Utilize appropriate screw retained and cemented provisional restorations prior to the completion of the definitive restoration.

Factors Affecting Treatment Planning for Root Canal Treatment and the Dental Implant
Mahmoud Torabinejad, D.M.D., M.S.D., Ph.D.
Advances in endosseous implants have a significant effect on treatment planning in dentistry. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss factors involved in decision-making regarding selection of root canal treatment or dental implants. The application of each procedure based on its proper indications and contraindications should provide comfort, function and aesthetics to patients who have been afflicted by oral diseases or traumatic injuries.
At conclusion, participants should be able to:
- Discuss effects of advances in dental implants on treatment planning in dentistry.
- Describe indications and contraindications for root canal treatment and single-tooth implants.
- List factors affecting the outcome of root canal treatment and single-tooth implants.
Implant Challenges in Endodontic Practice
Robert S. Roda, D.D.S., M.S.
As dental implant therapy continues to have an increasing effect on treatment planning and the specialty of endodontics, many endodontists are considering the incorporation of surgical placement of dental implants into their practice. This presentation will focus on the challenges of incorporating implant placement into endodontic practices. Combined with the information from the other speakers, the pitfalls and rewards of entering this new arena will be explored with the goal of allowing each practitioner to have a more complete understanding of how implant practice will affect them.
At conclusion, participants should be able to:
- Describe the challenges of incorporating surgical implant techniques into their practice.
- Describe the nature of the debate that will shape the future of endodontic practice.
- Decide for themselves if they will pursue this treatment modality in their practices or not.
Restorative Aspects: Pitfalls of Placing Implants
Clark M. Stanford, D.D.S., Ph.D.
This presentation will take participants through aspects of diagnosis and treatment planning with an aim to identify risk factors for implant therapy. First, a framework for assessment and determination of risk factors for restorative reconstructions will be provided. Second, a case-based discussion of restorative challenges with a discussion of cost/benefit assessments will be provided. Specific aspects will include: imaged-based treatment planning, implant placement, mucosal architecture, and recession and use of ceramic abutment materials.
At conclusion, participants should be able to:
- Identify 10 key risk factors to consider in implant treatment planning.
- Identify surgical and prosthodontic strategies to address these risk factors.
- Identify and apply strategies in case-based analysis of implant tooth replacement therapy.
