Thanks to the generosity of AAE members, the Foundation has been able to provide increasing opportunties in endodontic research and education. The Board of Trustees meet twice a year to approve funding requests for research grants, Fellowship awards, various workshops and initiatives based on the recommendations of AAE committees and individuals.

$20 Million Endowment Makes Large-Scale Funding a Reality
The 2006-2007 Campaign continued the Foundation’s winning fundraising record. A total of $895,000 was raised against a goal of $814,000. This accomplishment reflects the value that AAE members place on their specialty and on providing the highest standard of patient care.
In anticipation of the organization’s ability to consider large-scale grants, The Foundation and the AAE collaborated to prepare a Request for Proposal for scientific research. The document was finalized in July 2006 and distributed with a deadline date of January 2007. Applications were reviewed by the AAE’s Research and Scientific Affairs Committee at their March 17 meeting as well as by independent consultants selected for their expertise in assessing proposals of this nature. The committee’s recommendations were considered at the Foundation’s Annual Meeting.
Walter R. Bowles, D.D.S., M.S., an associate professor at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry was selected to receive a grant of $292,214 for his project, Factors Affecting Outcomes For Single‐Tooth Implants And Endodontic Restorations. Dr. Bowles’ grant is for one year of a two‐year study. Future funding will depend on an assessment of progress after one year.
The study is a retrospective comparison of initial nonsurgical root canal treatment and retreatment with single‐toothimplant supported restorations. The research team will examine case records from 10,000 patients who received treatment to provide a timeline for outcomes over a 10-year period. This project will require two-and-half years to complete.
Researchers will compare teeth treated with an implant to matched restored endodontically treated teeth. Four possible outcomes have been identified‐-success, survival, survival with subsequent treatment intervention, and failure. The project will also include an analysis of other potential prognostic factors such as location in mouth, age, gender, loss of alveolar bone height, obturation level, implant length and width, diabetes, smoking, apical periodontitis, post placement, number of appointments for endodontic treatment, costs and adjunctive procedures needed.
This research will be another valuable piece of evidence in the specialty’s body of scientific literature. The more evidence that is gathered, the better able endodontists will be to provide accurate answers for their patients and the public regarding the best options for treatment and the value of saving natural teeth.
The Board of Trustees also awarded $152,365 to 13 research projects.
Another significant grant was approved for Dr. Jens Ove Andreasen, University Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark. Dr. Andreasen received $60,000 to continue developing an interactive database for treatment planning and prognosis evaluation of traumatic injuries. The database will serve as a reference library for clinicians. It currently includes a complete trauma record for 2,430 patients along with photographic and radiographic documentation illustrating the type and severity of the trauma. This innovative project promises to have a worldwide impact on dentistry.
The Foundation also awarded a new Fellowship to Takashi Komabayashi, D.D.S., Ph.D., of the University of Connecticut and agreed to provide up to $90,000 in support for the AAE 2007 Educator Workshop. “It is extremely gratifying to have the ability to make grants at this level,” said AAE Foundation President Denis E. Simon III, D.D.S., M.S. “The AAE Foundation is the only organization that is devoted to strengthening research and education in our specialty. It is great to have the resources to make a real difference.”

Update From the Board of Trustees Interim Meeting
The Foundation Board of Trustees met on November 4, 2007. Our meeting was truly a milestone event and I have some exciting news to share with you. The Board approved $1.2 million in spending for grants! Some of these projects are new initiatives while others are ongoing. A number of them could directly benefit your institution. Following is a summary:
Ongoing Projects
- $166,091 in fall research funding with a total of $610,670 allocated to research in 2007;
- $260,000 for 2008 research grants, plus an additional $262,715 for year two of Dr. Walter Bowles’ project, Factors Affecting Outcomes for Single-Tooth Implants and Endodontic Restorations, contingent on approval of an annual progress report;
- $183,940 for tuition and stipends for four current Fellows and two new Fellows;
- $67,900 for a grant to educators to attend the Annual Session; and $11,000 for APICES.
New Initiatives
- $100,000 for a $500 one-time research grant to each new resident. Application forms will be sent to program directors in June. Residents would still be eligible to apply for a larger grant through the standard research review process;
- $100,000 for a matching grant to support an endowed faculty position. The purpose of the grant is to help institutions stimulate their fundraising efforts and to accommodate the diverse needs of each organization; A $100,000 lump sum grant for a postgraduate Fellowship Award for an endodontist who has been in practice 10 years or less and will agree to teach full-time for five years;
- $31,000 to send educators/fellows to the ADEA Institute for Teaching and Learning. The Foundation will pay registration and lodging for a postgraduate fellow to attend the Institute and half the registration and lodging for the first 10 full-time educators who apply to attend; and
- $90,000 for an AAE consensus conference to standardize diagnostic terminology. Application forms for the new grants are being finalized. The Foundation will notify you when they are available for download on the Web site.
We are very excited about these opportunities and hope that they will strengthen our specialty’s academic and scientific initiatives.
Sincerely,
Denis E. Simon III, D.D.S., M.S.
President
