American Board of Endodontics Announces New Directors
CHICAGO — The American Board of Endodontics elected three new members to its Board of Directors during the 2008 American Association of Endodontists’ Annual Session, April 9 – 12, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. John F. Hatton, D.M.D., of Edwardsville, Ill.; Michael M. Hoen, D.D.S., of Detroit, Mich.; and Patrick E. Taylor, D.D.S., of Bellevue, Wash., were elected.
Dr. John F. Hatton has been a Diplomate of the ABE since 1992. and a member of the AAE since 1984. He currently serves as associate director and tenured professor of the Center for Advanced Dental Education at St. Louis University. In addition to his teaching and administrative activities, Dr. Hatton is a noted researcher and author with more than 40 published articles and abstracts, as well as a contributing author to the endodontic textbook Urgent Care in the Dental Office, an Essential Handbook. Dr. Hatton received his D.M.D. from Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in 1982, and his certificate of endodontics from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry in 1984.
Dr. Michael M. Hoen has been a Diplomate of the ABE since 1990, and a member of the AAE since 1987. He has been the director of the advanced specialty program in endodontics at the University of Detroit Mercy since 2001. As a member of the AAE, he has served on the Educational Affairs and Evidence-Based Endodontics Committees, the latter of which he served as chair. He retired as a colonel from the U.S. Army in 1996 after 26 years of active service. Dr. Hoen also serves on the Michigan Association of Endodontists board of directors. He received his D.D.S. from the University of Detroit in 1978, and his certificate of endodontics from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1987.
Dr. Patrick E. Taylor has been a Diplomate of the ABE since 1994, and a member of the AAE since 1984. In addition to maintaining a private practice in Bellevue, Wash., he is an affiliate professor for the graduate endodontic clinic at the University of Washington. He is a former director of the AAE (2003-2006) and president of the Washington State Association of Endodontists (2002-2003). Dr. Taylor’s research has been published in several scientific journals, and he currently serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Endodontics. He received his D.D.S. from the University of California at San Francisco in 1977, and his certificate of endodontics from the University of Washington in 1988.

The American Association of Endodontists sponsors the American Board of Endodontics. Founded in 1964, the American Board of Endodontics is the only certifying board for the specialty of endodontics and is recognized by the American Dental Association.
ABE Diplomate status is awarded to qualified candidates who have demonstrated diagnostic skill, clinical proficiency and professional judgment of a level that promotes the highest quality of care for patients. They have taken an examination administered by a panel of peer experts and have demonstrated an exemplary level of knowledge, understanding and clinical expertise in endodontics.
