Statement Regarding Safety of Root Canals and Anesthesia

The American Association of Endodontists stands by the proven safety record of root canal procedures with anesthesia administered by appropriately-trained dental professionals.

Root canal treatment is a safe and effective procedure.  More than 17 million root canals are routinely performed by dental professionals annually. Root canal procedures are the best way to save natural teeth, and advances in anesthesia and technology, such as digital radiography and operating microscopes, have dramatically improved the precision and success of every step of the root canal procedure.

Most dental procedures, including root canals, require administration of an anesthetic. The American Dental Association provides guidelines to help dental professionals administer pain controllers in the safest manner possible.  Dental professionals use pain and anxiety control techniques to treat tens of millions of patients safely each year.  Endodontists complete a minimum of two years advanced training beyond dental school, including specialized training in administering anesthesia.

As with any medical or dental procedure, there is a certain amount of risk, so it is important to speak with your dental professional about any existing or previous health conditions, current medications and allergic reactions.

The American Association of Endodontists is the recognized dental specialty representing endodontists, dental specialists in root canal treatment. It is dedicated to supporting dental professionals in providing the highest standard of patient care.
