CHICAGO — Dr. Shepard S. Goldstein of Boston, Mass., was elected president of the American Association of Endodontists during its 2007 Annual Session, held April 25 - 28, in Philadelphia, Pa.
Dr. Goldstein has been actively involved in the Association for years, serving as president-elect from 2006-2007, vice president from 2005-2006, on the AAE’s Board of Directors from 2002-2005, as a member of the Journal of Endodontics Editorial Board from 1987-1991, and participating in the work of numerous committees including Continuing Education, Membership Services and Public and Professional Affairs.
“Dr. Goldstein has the right combination of leadership and endodontic acumen that will help him excel during his presidency,” said Dr. John S. Olmsted, AAE immediate past president. “I have no doubt that he will forge a path that will bring the specialty to an even higher level.”
One of Dr. Goldstein’s goals for his tenure is to heighten awareness not only of the specialty, but also of the resources available to the dental profession through the Association. With a current membership of more than 7,000 endodontists, educators and general dentists, he sees the AAE as the beacon of endodontic information.
“The Association does more than represent endodontists across the world,” said Dr. Goldstein. “We have an obligation to provide the latest in research, education and leadership to the dental community. Without that knowledge-sharing, we cannot continue to thrive as a specialty.”
Another of Dr. Goldstein’s goal is to continue the successful consumer outreach stemming from the AAE’s public awareness campaign, Endodontists: the root canal specialists. Launched in 2004, the campaign has helped raise the public’s understanding of what endodontics is and how it can save their natural teeth.
“The dental community shouldn’t be the only groups to benefit from our Association,” he said. “We have a great story to tell about our ability to save natural teeth. We are spreading that story in as many ways, to as many people as possible.”
In addition to his leadership in the AAE, Dr. Goldstein has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics since 1976. His professional activity extends to several other dental organizations, including the American Dental Association, Metropolitan District Dental Society, Massachusetts Association of Endodontists and the Massachusetts Dental Society, where he served as president from 2002-2003. Dr. Goldstein also has played an integral role in planning annual meetings of the Yankee Dental Congress, serving as general chair (1995) and in chair positions for the Congress’ Scientific Committee.
Dr. Goldstein maintains full-time practices limited to endodontics in Framingham and Marlboro, Mass., and is a lecturer on endodontics at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Additionally, he is a staff associate at Forsyth Dental Center in Boston. He received his D.M.D. degree in 1966 from Tufts University and served a residency in endodontics at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pa. He and his wife Carole reside in Boston. They have two adult children, Glenn and Jill.
