| Residents take a break from bowling at Jillian's Billiards during the social event on Saturday night. | This summer, the fifth annual APICES was held at its flagship campus of Boston University in Boston, Mass., from August 1 – 3. A total of 151 residents from 32 programs were in attendance.
The Advanced Programs in Clinical Endodontics Symposium is the brain child of two Boston University residents, Drs. Brian P. Chuang and Jessica L. Barr. They believe residents from across the country could benefit from the opportunity to share information, hear the Association's most dynamic speakers and experience participating in the specialty. Since 2004, the goal of APICES is to develop a seminar organized for residents by residents, and to provide an educational and social environment for residents to interact and build camaraderie.
“It's so thrilling to be back in the very place where APICES started years ago when Jessica and I were residents,” said Dr. Chuang. “Dream it, and it really can come true. I am grateful for the help of so many along the way to make it a reality.”
Aside from the cost of travel, the weekend-long event is free for residents to attend. All of this is possible with the generous sponsorship of the dental industry, AAE and the AAE Foundation. Since the first event in Boston, the AAE has helped to facilitate the transition from one site to the next. Assistant Executive Director for Development Debby E. Rice has been there from the beginning.

| Amidst all the action, these two residents took a break to sit and enjoy each others' company. | “The great thing about APICES is that the event has a new personality each year,” said Ms. Rice. “Every school and class gives the meeting their unique stamp. From riding the mechanical bull at Studio City in Los Angeles, Calif., to catching fly balls with the Cardinals in St. Louis, Mo., I've really enjoyed seeing what the residents come up with to entertain their colleagues and showcase their program. On the studious side, it is also great that the best speakers in the AAE are eager to share their knowledge and expertise with the newest members of the Association.”
The 2008 APICES Chair Nidhi Prakash, a second-year BU resident, headed the planning committee along with 13 other residents. They received guidance from APICES veteran and newly named BU Goldman School of Dental Medicine Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter.
“It was an energizing experience from which I learned a lot,” commented Dr. Prakash. “Initially, I felt overwhelmed, but with the support of the AAE and my fellow classmates, we were able to make it a big success.” Meeting great leaders in the field and having residents across the country under one roof are her most cherished memories of the event.

| Residents from various programs attend the Welcome Reception on Friday | Highlights from the symposium included a Welcome Reception for the residents in the Trustees Ballroom and invigorating lectures from speakers, such as AAE President Louis E. Rossman, along with Drs. G. Matthew Brock, B. Ellen Byrne, George T. Goodis, Kenneth M. Hargreaves, Syngcuk Kim, Jarshen Lin, John T. McSpadden, Carl W. Newton, Denis E. Simon III and Jerome H. Stroumza. The Saturday night social event was held at Jillian's Billiards just steps from the historic Fenway Park and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
APICES 2009 will be held August 7 – 9, at the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash.
