We hope you&#8217;re inspired to take action by the following examples of your colleagues giving back to their communities&#8230;and if you already have, <\/em><a href=\"mailto:foundation@aae.org?subject=Our%20volunteer\/access%20to%20care%20story...\"><em>please tell us your story<\/em><\/a><em>!<\/em><\/p>\n\t<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aae.org\/foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/07\/Picture2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><strong>Dr. Andrew <\/strong><strong>D&#8217;Amelio<\/strong><strong> (pictured with Dr. Francisco Nieves<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong> began volunteering at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercy-clinic.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\" data-feathr-link-aids=\"[&quot;636d5f3cb6ec0e11f062f95e&quot;]\">Mercy Clinic<\/a> in Ft Worth after viewing the <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/showcase\/9464239\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\" data-feathr-link-aids=\"[&quot;636d5f3cb6ec0e11f062f95e&quot;]\">Foundation&#8217;s videos on the first round of domestic access to care grants<\/a>. He retired from private practice in Naples, FL and moved to Texas to be near two sons.<\/p>\n\t<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aae.org\/foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/07\/Picture3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>The Smith Island Dental Clinic Project which <strong>Dr. Gael Delany<\/strong> of Chevy Chase, MD helped found and treats the underserved residents of a remote island off the coast of Maryland. Its expanding scope of care includes periodontics and crown and bridge with implants on the horizon.\u00a0 The succession of endodontic care established by Dr. Delany will be continued by University of Maryland residents now also volunteering at the clinic.<\/p>\n\t<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aae.org\/foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/07\/Picture4-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/>Inspired by his experience volunteering with the Foundation&#8217;s international access to care program in Jamaica, Foundation Trustee <strong>Dr. Ryan McMahan<\/strong> of Gaylord, MI has created Samaritan Dental Foundation, a registered 501c3 public charity, whose mission is to provide access to dental care in rural northern Michigan for patients in need through faith-based community partnerships.\u00a0 The Northeast region of Michigan in which Dr. McMahan practices has the highest rate of healthcare uninsured residents in the state (double the statewide average in his county) with very high patient to provider ratios.<\/p>\n\t<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aae.org\/foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/07\/Picture5-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>Dr. Jeff Dzingle<\/strong> and his practice partner <strong>Dr. Patrick Mullally<\/strong> (currently Michigan Endodontists Association president) of Lake Michigan Endodontics with three offices in western Michigan, participate in three different <em>pro bono<\/em> programs: Delta Dental&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deltadentalmi.com\/Healthy-Kids-Dental\">Healthy Kids<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/volunteerdental.org\/\">Volunteer For Dental<\/a> in which low income patients earn credits toward free dental services through community service hours and an oral health education class; and a local chapter of <a href=\"https:\/\/loveinactiontricities.org\/\">Love In Action<\/a>, a faith-based network which operates a community medical and dental clinic among other services. Their practice frequently sees up to a <em>pro bono<\/em> case a day.<\/p>\n\t<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aae.org\/foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/07\/Picture6-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Sue Suh<\/strong> founded <a href=\"https:\/\/smileuntohim.org\/\">Smile Unto Him<\/a>, a comprehensive free dental clinic in Riverside, CA serving low-income veterans and seniors. She devotes 40% of her practice income to help fund the clinic, working there every Saturday and by offering endodontic CE courses to local general dentists. More than 30 volunteer providers include dentists and dental students. The clinic&#8217;s current space has three chairs and two microscopes; Dr. Suh is working on securing new space that would increase the operatory to 10 chairs.<\/p>\n\t<p>With leadership from <strong>Dr. Jacqueline Allen<\/strong>, the Central Arizona Dental Society Foundation organizes three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azmom.org\/\">Arizona Mission of Mercy<\/a> clinics annually in the Phoenix Veterans Memorial Coliseum to provide free dental treatment to low-income working-poor families, unemployed or uninsured individuals, veterans, seniors, and homeless residents. Some patients haven&#8217;t eaten solid food for years, many were unable to find a job while lacking a &#8220;professional appearance&#8221; or having difficulty speaking due to their poor oral health. Up to 1800 patients are being treated a year. Among nearly 300 dentist volunteers, joining Dr. Allen to provide endodontic treatments are AAE members <strong>Drs. Bradley Gettleman, Robert Roda, Ian Bennett, Paul Kogan, Susan Wood, Ryan Engelberg, Betty Schindler, Edward Carlson, Kip Sterling, Mohammed Elseed, Kevin Axx, Colin Clatnoff, and Steven Richardson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Foundation salutes the tremendous spirit of giving and philanthropy in the endodontic community.
