Markus Haapasalo, D.D.S., Ph.D.

Biography

Dr. Haapasalo received his dental degree from the University of Helsinki Faculty of Dentistry in Finland in 1978. He received his Ph.D. in the microbiology of endodontic infections from the University of Helsinki in 1986 and completed his certificate of endodontics in 1987. He taught and practiced endodontics in private practice and at the University.

From 1995 to 2004, he served as professor of endodontics and was later promoted to head of the Department of Endodontics and director of the postgraduate program in endodontics at the University of Oslo Faculty of Dentistry in Norway. In 2004, Dr. Haapasalo accepted the position of professor and head of the division of endodontics at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry in Canada. In 2006, he became the acting head of the department of oral biological and medical sciences at the University.

Dr. Haapasalo is active in various dental organizations. He is a member of the Canadian Dental Association and Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and an Associate member of AAE. He has authored or co-authored over 90 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is the editor-in-chief of the scientific international journal Endodontic Topics, an associate editor of the Journal of Endodontics, and serves on the Editorial Board of the International Endodontic Journal. He is also a reviewer for several other scientific journals and has contributed to several endodontic textbooks. He is the editor of the multimedia program Visual Endodontics Curriculum. In clinical endodontics, his special interests include instrumentation, irrigation, persistent infections, resorptions and root canal morphology.

He has received several teaching awards including the French Endodontic Society’s Louis I. Grossman International Award in 2007. He actively lectures about endodontics worldwide.

  • Microbiology of Endodontic Infections
    Topic: Microbiology, Inflammation & Immunology

    This seminar is an update on the microbial etiology of pulpitis and apical periodontitis, including a short summary on pathogenesis and the role of host defense in the development of the diseases. The role of microbes in other endodontic diseases such as resorptions will also be summarized.

  • Persistent Endodontic Infections
    Topic: Microbiology, Inflammation & Immunology

    This presentation will focus on the microbiological and other reasons for post-treatment endodontic disease. Although the main focus of the discussion is on microbiology, including periapical, actinomycosis and other extraradicular infections, treatment recommendations and clinical examples will also be included.

  • Elimination of Endodontic Infections
    Topic: Microbiology, Inflammation & Immunology

    A description of the special nature of endodontic infections as opposed to other infections in the human body will be discussed. The role played by the various host and treatment factors in the elimination of the endodontic infection, and the recommendations for long-term success in controlling the endodontic infection will also be presented.

  • Irrigation in Endodontics
    Topic: Microbiology, Inflammation & Immunology

    This seminar is an in-depth expansion of one component in the topic “Elimination of Endodontic Infections—Irrigation.” A detailed understanding of the chemical and microbiological effects of the various irrigating solutions, irrigation hydrodynamics and irrigation technology will be discussed.
