Shahrokh Shabahang, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D.


Dr. Shabahang received his D.D.S. degree in 1987 from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. Prior to receiving his certificate of endodontics and M.S. degree in 1997 from Loma Linda University, he practiced general dentistry for eight years in a group practice in the San Francisco Bay area. In 2001, he received his Ph.D. in microbiology and molecular genetics from LLU. During the same year, he obtained his Board certification from the American Board of Endodontics.

Since then, he has been a faculty member in the department of endodontics at LLU where he is involved in teaching and research, which has been focused on the determination of the effects of chronic and acute infections on the systemic health and healing following infection, and injury including the response of the pulp and periradicular tissues to treatment. He has authored articles and textbook chapters in these fields, and lectured worldwide on these topics.

In more recent years, his focus has been on probiotic application of microorganisms to harness their potential benefits for treatment of human diseases. He presented and obtained approval by the regulatory agencies to initiate the first-in-man (Phase I) clinical trials on a therapeutic agent for the treatment of cancer.

    Topic: Performing Root-End Closure Procedures

    This presentation highlights the biological role of the dental pulp in tooth development, as well as the impact of its demise on cessation of root development. Various procedures will be discussed to maximize the opportunity for the restoration of health and increasing the long-term survival of these teeth. This presentation will also discuss materials that are available for treatment of not only immature permanent teeth, but also mature teeth that have open apices due to pathological or iatrogenic reasons.
