Van T. Himel, D.D.S.
Dr. Himel is currently the department chair at the Louisiana State University and was previously professor and chair of the department of endodontics and operative dentistry at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry. He has been at the university for 19 years, and also maintains a part-time endodontic practice.
He is a native of Louisiana and received his D.D.S. degree from Louisiana State University School of Dentistry. After serving two years in the U.S. Air Force and five years of maintaining a private practice, he returned to LSU for graduate training in endodontics. After earning his certificate of endodontics, he joined the faculty of LSU where he served as head of the endodontic graduate program.
Dr. Himel is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and member of the AAE and American Dental Association. He has been active in organized dentistry, published numerous articles in scientific journals and presented many continuing education courses.

Nonsurgical Endodontic Treatment & Retreatment
Topic: Nonsurgical Endodontic Treatment & Retreatment
Basic principles of endodontic therapy will be presented, and a lecture, hands-on or combination format can also be scheduled. Topics that may be included depending on time constraints are:
- Cleaning and shaping (disease control)
- Coronal seal
This program will discuss how various file designs have taken advantage of nickel titanium’s unique properties to produce an instrument that functions differently than previous files. Various techniques of obturating root canal systems will also be discussed. Research data and clinical cases will be presented to support the proposed technique, and detailed hand-outs will be provided.
One half- or full-day lecture or workshop.
