Letter to Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Youth use of tobacco products in any form is unsafe.” Furthermore, according to a 2004 report of the Surgeon General, smoking adversely affects nearly every organ of the body. The mouth is no exception. Tobacco use threatens tooth enamel, causes tooth decay, destroys soft tissue, and, perhaps most significantly, causes oropharyngeal cancers.

A decade after its 2004 report, the 2014 report of the U.S. Surgeon General declared, “Recent surveys monitoring trends in tobacco use indicate that more people are using multiple tobacco products, particularly youth and young adults. The percentage of U.S. middle and high school students who use electronic, or e-cigarettes, more than doubled between 2011 and 2012.” The American Association of Endodontists (AAE) is a champion for policies that help protect natural teeth, and promote good oral health and its relation to patients’ overall health.
