{"id":15233,"date":"2020-03-18T13:14:59","date_gmt":"2020-03-18T18:14:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aae.org\/specialty\/?p=15233"},"modified":"2020-05-14T05:29:44","modified_gmt":"2020-05-14T10:29:44","slug":"american-association-of-endodontists-provides-considerations-for-dental-and-endodontic-care-amid-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aae.org\/specialty\/american-association-of-endodontists-provides-considerations-for-dental-and-endodontic-care-amid-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"American Association of Endodontists Provides Considerations for Dental and Endodontic Care Amid COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>For Immediate Release<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CHICAGO \u2013 The AAE announced several recommended considerations to its 8,000-plus endodontist and dentist members amid COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement came at a time when other dental organizations revealed similar recommendations regarding dental care and emergency vs. non-emergency treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the rapid and global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is the responsibility of everyone \u2013 health care providers and fellow citizens \u2013 to do everything possible to reduce the spread of this infection,\u201d said Dr. Keith V. Krell, AAE President. \u201cWhile there is no simple solution to balancing delivery of oral health care and minimizing the spread of the coronavirus, there is much we as endodontists and dentists can do to help reduce its spread.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with these recommendations, the AAE also published on its website, ahead of its publication in the May issue of the<em>Journal of Endodontics<\/em>, <a href=\"aae.org\/covid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a review<\/a> co-authored by Dr. Ken M. Hargreaves providing an overview of the epidemiology, symptoms and routes of transmission of COVID-19. In addition, specific recommendations for dental practice are suggested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdvance publishing of this very important guidance has been critical in getting our members up to speed on the situation we\u2019re facing,\u201d Dr. Krell said. \u201cIn the coming days, we\u2019ll continue to respond accordingly as the situation changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AAE\u2019s recommendations are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We agree with the CDC as well as professional organizations such as the ADA in recommending postponement of non-urgent oral health care for up to three weeks.<\/li>\n<li>Examples of urgent conditions requiring oral health care may include severe dental pain, abscess with lymphadenopathy, or a dental infection-related fever.<\/li>\n<li>Some urgent conditions may be treated with appropriate analgesics or antibiotics. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mmsend86.com\/link.cfm?r=9xkLY1D1zzND4USneeUFJg~~&amp;pe=b7LvuhvWKTH4yqOvdM4ggnb98Aj31p8RR5VhTYL448myhP6VLBxcPzPFCxQ4M2ZmCAblIsN5yskIVUA2i8rriw~~&amp;t=INSERT_TRACKING_ENCID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent report<\/a> from the <em>British Medical Journal<\/em> recommends acetaminophen over ibuprofen. While providing pharmacological treatment, practitioners can continue to monitor patient responses by telephone contact.<\/li>\n<li>If pharmacotherapy is insufficient, <a href=\"aae.org\/covid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the recent review<\/a> co-authored by Dr. Ken M. Hargreaves summarizes considerations for appropriate dental care.<\/li>\n<li>As of now, the impact of the epidemic varies across the country. Accordingly, the recommendations of our members\u2019 local and state dental societies should be reviewed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As this pandemic evolves, new recommendations will likely emerge.
