Here\u2019s your to-do list:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>First and foremost, take the opportunity to <strong>make time for yourself<\/strong>. You\u2019re approaching the conclusion of a 10+ year journey to become an endodontist\u2014a journey that was likely riddled with sleepless nights, highs and lows, and multiple sacrifices.\u00a0 Make time for yourself, your family, sleeping, recharging.\u00a0 You\u2019ve made it to the top and it\u2019s time to reflect on your hard work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Find a job.<\/strong> An obvious to-do list item, but I\u2019ll mention a few notes.\u00a0 Utilize the AAE Career Center (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aae.org\/specialty\/careers\/career-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.aae.org\/specialty\/careers\/career-center\/<\/a>) and inquire with mentors if they know of open positions.\u00a0 Keep in mind that <strong>contracts are negotiable<\/strong>.\u00a0 Moving out of state? Ask for relocation fees.\u00a0 Seek advice from faculty or other practicing endodontists whom you trust, as well as legal providers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Get insurance.<\/strong> Congrats, finishing residency basically means you\u2019re going to carry a lot of insurance.\u00a0 Look into <strong>disability, malpractice, and health insurance <\/strong>policies\u2014you\u2019re likely being covered by your residency program\/hospital system right now and depending on your job (W-2 vs. 1099 employee) you may be responsible for paying for these policies.\u00a0 Take advantage of <strong>academic discounts<\/strong> before you graduate and seek multiple quotes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Prepare for credentialing. <\/strong>Every state has a slightly different licensure process\u2014some require a specialty-specific license, some have longer turnaround times than others.\u00a0 In addition to your dental license, consider applying for a DEA license (takes 4-6 weeks per their website).\u00a0 Ask your future employer what their plan is for preparing your insurance credentialing and ensuring coverage.\u00a0 Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>Planning out your ABE Board Exams. <\/strong>Endodontic board certification requires successful completion of 3 examinations: written, oral, and case history.\u00a0 While the written exam has a set date (May 16), the timeline for oral and case history exams is far more fluid.\u00a0 Decide the order in which you want to challenge these exams, as you will be asked to submit this decision after (*fingers crossed*) passing the written exam this spring.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Best of luck with your final steps in this incredible journey to becoming an endodontist!<\/p>\n<p><em>Dr. Andrea Tsatalis practices endodontics in Tampa, Florida.
