{"id":24344,"date":"2023-06-26T13:53:08","date_gmt":"2023-06-26T18:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aae.org\/specialty\/?p=24344"},"modified":"2023-06-29T10:55:39","modified_gmt":"2023-06-29T15:55:39","slug":"the-perils-of-perfectionism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aae.org\/specialty\/the-perils-of-perfectionism\/","title":{"rendered":"The Perils of Perfectionism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23366\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aae.org\/specialty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/Tsatalis200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aae.org\/specialty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/Tsatalis200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.aae.org\/specialty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/Tsatalis200-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.aae.org\/specialty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/Tsatalis200-83x83.jpg 83w, https:\/\/www.aae.org\/specialty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/Tsatalis200-104x104.jpg 104w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>By Dr. Andrea Tsatalis<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a field where we measure to the \u00bd millimeter, it\u2019s no surprise that perfectionism is a common tendency among endodontists.<\/p>\n<p>Looking outside the scope, one can find perfectionism everywhere\u2026a phenomena fueled by social media, real-time communication technology, and a global economy.\u00a0 Struggles with perfectionism are a common topic of TED talk lectures, memes, and celebrity confessionals alike.\u00a0 But how often do we as an endodontic community address our predispositions toward perfectionism?<\/p>\n<p>The American Psychological Association defines perfectionism as \u201cthe tendency to demand of others or of oneself an extremely high or even flawless level of performance, in excess of what is required by the situation.\u201d<sup>1.<\/sup>\u00a0 Curran and Hill evaluated over 40,000 college students in a 27-year study assessing the pervasiveness of perfectionism.\u00a0 While 9% of subjects scored high in socially prescribed perfectionism in 1989, a rise to 18% was observed in 2016.<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0\u00a0 Perfectionism has been linked to several mental health issues (depression, anxiety) and somatic symptoms (fatigue, insomnia).<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The toxicity of perfectionism lies in its inherent abstraction\u2014perfect is an impossible reality.\u00a0 Voltaire\u2019s famous aphorism \u201c<em>perfect is the enemy of good<\/em>\u201d also alludes to its negative effects on performance.<sup>4<\/sup> \u00a0We\u2019ve all gone back to retreat a recently-obturated canal and found our second attempt was worse than the first.\u00a0 Or maybe you\u2019ve decided to push the file just a ~little~ bit more and ledged, transported, or separated that same file.<\/p>\n<p>It is noteworthy to emphasize the distinction between \u201caiming for perfect\u201d and \u201caiming for excellent.\u201d\u00a0 Is this article a call to lower your standards?\u00a0 Of course not.\u00a0 However, all-consuming perfectionism threatens to distort reasonable and clinically acceptable standards of care.<\/p>\n<p>Take time today to acknowledge that possibility that unwelcome events can happen in a clinical setting.\u00a0 Focus on what you have the power to control and set attainable goals.\u00a0 Perfectionism may \u201cthe enemy of good,\u201d but by understanding and mitigating perfectionistic tendencies, we can all aim for great.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Works Cited:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1: American Psychological Association.
