In January, the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) joined forces with 12 other prominent dental organizations, including the American Dental Association (ADA), to urge the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to safeguard water fluoridation programs. In a joint letter to the EPA, the dental coalition reaffirmed its strong support for maintaining optimal fluoride levels in local water supplies to prevent tooth decay and promote overall oral health.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This united action was in response to a concerning ruling by the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in the case of Food & Water Watch v. EPA. The court\u2019s decision claimed that fluoridating drinking water at the recommended level of 0.7 mg\/L posed an \u201cunreasonable risk\u201d of reduced IQ in children. However, the dental community has raised significant concerns about the poor quality of the scientific data underpinning this ruling.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The district court\u2019s decision threatened to compel the EPA to take regulatory action under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), a move that could disrupt local water fluoridation programs nationwide. This posed a serious risk to one of the most effective public health measures to prevent tooth decay, a condition affecting millions of Americans annually.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to the swift advocacy of the dental community, the EPA has now appealed the court\u2019s decision. This critical step reaffirms the Agency\u2019s commitment to evidence-based policies and questions the validity of the court\u2019s findings. Notably, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has long recognized water fluoridation as one of the most outstanding public health achievements of the 20th century, a sentiment echoed by dental professionals nationwide.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The AAE and its partners remain steadfast in preserving safe and adequate water fluoridation programs. By educating stakeholders, policymakers, and the public about the proven health benefits of fluoride, the dental community will continue to counter misinformation and oppose efforts to undermine this vital public health measure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
