Whole-body Benefits

Groundbreaking research shows that root canal treatment can help protect more than just your smile—it can benefit your heart health and reduce diabetes risk.

The Research

Infographic showing links between root canal infection, inflammation, bacteria in the blood, cardiovascular risk, diabetes risk, and metabolic changes.

In the first of its kind research, a clinical study by King’s College London tracked changes in blood chemistry following root canal treatment for a common dental infection (apical periodontitis). The infection can cause bacteria to enter the bloodstream and increase inflammation, associated with risks to cardiac health and reduced ability to control blood sugar levels.

AAE Amplifying its Reach

The American Association of Endodontists have issued a news release to extend the reach of this research. Research from King's College London found that successful root canal treatment improved patients' glucose metabolism and cholesterol profiles and lowered inflammation — suggesting the procedure helps protect heart and metabolic health, not just save the tooth.
