Brooke Blicher DMD, Certificate in Endodontics

Biography

Dr. Brooke Blicher received her DMD from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine where she graduated with honors in research, and her certificate in Endodontics from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Blicher is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, and a Fellow in both the American College of Dentistry and the International College of Dentistry. She continues to be involved with teaching, research and mentorship, holding faculty appointments at both Harvard and Tufts Schools of Dental Medicine. Dr. Blicher has been involved in organized dentistry as a member of several committees for the American Association of Endodontists, and her local and state dental societies.

While providing state of the art specialty care in her private practice in White River Junction, Vermont, Dr. Blicher continues to pursue her academic interests. She authored the chapter “Diagnosis and Treatment Planning” in the 6th edition of Endodontics: Principles and Practice, and co-wrote the textbook Endodontics: A Review, now in its second edition. She has published extensively, including in the Journal of Dental Research, General Dentistry, Inside Dentistry, and Compendium. Dr. Blicher has lectured both locally and internationally on endodontic diagnosis, non-odontogenic pain, fractures, trauma, resorption, treatment of immature teeth, and CBCTs in endodontics as well as on ideal restorative care following endodontic treatment.

  • Not Your Typical Toothache
    Topic:
    Learning Objectives:

    • Review the diagnosis of pulpal and periapical disease
    • Differentiate resorptive dental diseases and their unique management strategies
    • Assess fracture pathology and discuss an evidence-based management algorithm

The common endodontic diagnosis of pulpal and periapical pathology can be quickly complicated by the additional findings of resorption, fractures, or combined endodontic-periodontal disease. Though on the surface these atypical cases appear more challenging or less predictable in their treatment, careful diagnosis of these conditions can provide patients with predictable long-term treatment solutions.

A solid diagnostic foundation is crucial to making any endodontic treatment decisions, and advances in diagnostic technologies, namely the advent of CBCT imaging, allow clinicians to more predictably detect complicating factors. Whereas pathologic resorption and fractures were historically discovered during exploratory endodontic procedures, CBCT imaging allows clinicians to detect these defects prior to clinical care, permitting more thoughtful guided treatment decisions. Endodontic-periodontal communications, once considered a rarity, are now detected with great frequency preoperatively. Knowledge is power in endodontics, and allows for thoughtful preoperative discussions and diagnosis-driven treatment planning.

This lecture will prepare clinicians with the evidence and skills necessary to both diagnosis and manage complicated endodontic disease. Clinicians will differentiate the heterogeneous group of entities that make up resorptive pathologies, including those without a pulpal source. Furthermore, clinicians will be able to recognize cracks and fractures, and possess an evidence-based algorithm for their diagnosis and management. Finally, the diagnosis and management of periodontal-endodontic disease will be discussed. Attendees will leave comfortable and confident in their skills in diagnosing those findings considered atypical in endodontics.

    Format: 1/2 Day Lecture
