Dental Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center Named for Director Emeritus and Father
On November 14, a dedication was held to celebrate the renaming of The Newark Beth Israel Dental Center to The Chivian Dental Health Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in honor of Dr. Noah Chivian, emeritus chair, Department of Dentistry, and former director of endodontics. His father, Dr. Jacob Chivian, who passed away in 1971, was one of the first dentists to join the staff in 1928.
“This naming was made possible by the generosity of Simona Chivian Chazen and her husband Jerome Chazen,” Dr. Noah Chivian said.
Dr. Chivian continues to teach in the Chivian Dental Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and is a professor of endodontics at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. His father served until 1958; Dr. Noah Chivian joined the staff in 1959.
The Dental Center is now New Jersey’s largest hospital-based dental program, providing 16,000 outpatient visits and 500 inpatient consultations each year, and supports cardiac surgery, oncology, organ transplantation, psychiatry and other NBIMC medical programs.
NBIMC’s General Practice Residency Program continues to lead dental education. The program, one of the largest and most diverse in the region, is designed to provide hands-on clinical, didactic, and hospital-based experience at the postdoctoral level.
Dr. Noah Chivian recently shared some personal thoughts on the Dental Center:
“The Newark Beth Israel Dental Clinic was part of my life growing in our home/office in Newark, N.J. I have a firm recollection of a recurring Wednesday morning ritual. Sitting at the breakfast table, I would ask my father what he was doing that day. He would respond, ‘I’m going to treat patients at the Dental Clinic.’ From my 5-year-old’s perspective of the world, I thought that every dentist went to the “Clinic” on Wednesday mornings. And I followed suit and joined the teaching staff shortly after my graduation from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. With time out for a research-teaching Fellowship at Temple University, my dental involvement at “the Beth” adds up to 60 years.
“By the way, I have had a lifelong association with the Beth Israel, I was born there. Now, through the generosity of my sister and brother in law, Simona and Jerry Chazen, my father and I have been honored by naming the Chivian Dental Center for us.”
In addition to being an AAE past president, Noah Chivian, DDS, FACD, FICD, is also a Diplomate, American Board of Endodontics and past president, Foundation for Endodontics.
