Dr. James L. Gutmann Honored by the Royal College of Surgeons

2017 Edgar D. Coolidge Award winner Dr. James L. Gutmann added another accolade to his banner year: in September, he received the highest honor that is bestowed on a dental surgeon, an Honorary Fellowship in Dental Surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland — an award rarely received by a dentist. The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is an organization dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and advancement in surgical practice, through its interest in education, training and examinations; its liaison with external medical bodies; and representation of the modern surgical workforce.

Dr. Gutmann is professor emeritus in endodontics/restorative sciences at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, past-president of the American Association of Endodontists and president of the American Academy of the History of Dentistry, in addition to being the editor of the Journal of the History of Dentistry. He has presented more than 800 lectures, papers, and continuing education courses in the U.S. and 52 foreign countries. Additionally, he has authored or co-authored more than 300 articles in both dental journals that address scientific, research, educational and clinical topics and three textbooks, and has taught full time for more than 27 years at three major universities. He is a 1972 graduate of the postgraduate program in endodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry.
