Foundation Update: Onward and Upward

As the Foundation for Endodontics’s 2017 – 2018 fundraising campaign came to a close at the end of AAE18, there were many significant contributions to celebrate, from both new and existing donors.

Thanks to committed endodontists, residents and industry partners, the Foundation is primed to successfully support more endodontic research, education, public awareness and access to care. Nevertheless, the Foundation’s charge is significant, and funding initiatives and programs are continuously growing! Financial support is critical to the Foundation’s successful execution of supporting the future of the specialty.

Here’s why we need your continued support …

With its 2016 mission expansion, to include public awareness and access to care, the Foundation developed an international outreach program. The Foundation/Henry Schein Cares Foundation Outreach Program funds endodontists and residents to travel to Jamaica and provide patients access to root canal treatment. To date, there have been eight iterations of the program, saving over 260 teeth! As of April 2018, the Foundation is working closely with faculty and post-graduate endodontic residents at Einstein Medical Center on a pilot project to provide access to endodontic treatment in Philadelphia, to an underserved population. The expectation is that the pilot program will help the Foundation develop a funding opportunity, open to all post-graduate programs; the ultimate goal is to ignite the spirit of philanthropy among residents by funding endodontic access to care projects in their local communities.

It should be noted that with the expansion of the mission and its recent program growth, the Foundation is not cutting back on support to endodontic research and education. The Foundation firmly believes that strong endodontic research and education are the cornerstone of a strong specialty.

So, what’s next? …

May 2018 marks several new beginnings for the Foundation for Endodontics:

  1. Dr. Mary T. Pettiette, will begin her two-year term as Foundation President. Dr. John M. Nusstein will begin his two-year term a President-Elect of the Foundation.
  2. Foundation committees will work on refining current and developing new programs, such as the domestic outreach funding opportunity. The Foundation hopes to make opportunity widely available to all post-graduate resident programs, in the future.
  3. The Foundation will begin work with a consultant to develop and enhance its fundraising processes to benefit the future of the specialty. As the Foundation mission grows and expands, it plans to make adjustments to move to a broader, more ambitious playing field, with the goal of improving patient care and bringing the specialty great recognition and visibility.
