Health & Safety
Stay Healthy
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Travel Tips for Attending Conventions
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Remove name badges in public. Remove your name badge and ribbons when outside of the convention center or hotels. These are signs you are from out of town.
- Scan the environment. Stay alert and avoid talking on cell phones when walking down the street.
- Use the buddy system. Walk with friends, colleagues and new AAE acquaintances when traveling to/from your hotel.
- Guard your drink. Don’t leave your drinks unattended. If you need to use the restroom – or want to get out on the dance floor – throw away your drink or ask a friend to watch it.
- Personal identification. When traveling, it’s best to always have a photo ID with you. While you may feel safest storing your passport in the safe at the hotel, be sure to have a second photo ID that you can keep on hand.
- Emergency Contact. All AAE26 attendees were asked for an emergency contact during registration. Please ensure this information is accurate.
- Hotel Room. Don’t let anybody in the room without knowing they are expected and wearing a hotel uniform or name badge.
Although there is no vaccination or negative test requirement for AAE26, the AAE strongly recommends all meeting participants be vaccinated and boosted for all in-person meetings and events.
Review the complete AAE Health and Safety Code of Conduct.
The State of Utah, City of Salt Lake City and Venue guidelines will be followed during the meeting for mask mandates and social distancing. Currently, no mask mandate is in place.

Salt Lake City Information
A dirty soda is a popular drink (especially in Utah and the Mountain West) made by adding flavored syrups and/or cream to regular soda. It turns a plain soft drink into a sweet, dessert-like treat.
Common elements
- Base soda: Coke, Diet Coke, Dr Pepper, Sprite, Mountain Dew, etc.
- Flavor syrups: vanilla, coconut, lime, raspberry, peach
- Creamy add-ins: half-and-half, heavy cream, coconut cream
- Extras: fresh lime or lemon juice
Classic example: Diet Coke + coconut syrup + lime juice + cream
The name “dirty” just means the soda is “dressed up” or mixed, not alcoholic or inappropriate.
Visit the Exhibit Hall to try a Dirty Soda!
Yes! Despite being known for more strict liquor laws, the city does allow alcohol consumption. You can drink at bars, restaurants, breweries, and distilleries, but restaurant liquor licenses vary. Some restaurants require you to order food when purchasing alcohol, while others can serve alcohol without a food order. Alcohol is not allowed in most public places like streets or parks, and Utah has a strict DUI limit (0.05%).
Many restaurants, attractions, and shops—particularly downtown—are open evenings and Sundays. Conference attendees can enjoy dining, nightlife, live music, cultural attractions, and events after sessions and throughout the weekend.
For more information on things to do or lists of restaurants and their hours, please visit the Visit Salt Lake Website.
Yes. You can ski in April near Salt Lake City, depending on snow conditions and the year. Many nearby resorts (such as Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude) often stay open into April—and sometimes later—thanks to high elevation and strong spring snowfall. Conditions vary, so it’s best to check resort schedules and snow reports closer to your visit.
The Visit Salt Lake Skiing & Snowboarding website is your one-stop-shop for your ski pass information and transportation to the mountains. The Ski Bus is a very convenient option for transportation to and from the mountains.
